How To Create a Customized Sash with Cricut

How To Create a Customized Sash with Cricut

Customized sashes are so simple to make with your Cricut Machine. However, I have always seen sashes with generic text in the store and wondered if I could personalize them for specific events.  Well, my friend, I can tell you that you can!

Aside from the usual Cricut supplies, you are going to need a blank sash.  After several trips to Hobby Lobby, I finally found one, but you can also find them on Amazon, other craft stores, and party supply stores.

A customized sash is just one of the many DIY projects I made for my mom’s 60th birthday.  The theme of the party was “Sixty Years Loved.”  I also made a cake topper, DIY Chiara backdrop,  a balloon garland, and a balloon column. So stay tuned for those DIYs.

For what event are you making your sash?  Let me know in the comment section below.

Designing the Text

Measure the length and width of the sash to determine the largest possible size of your text.

Open the Cricut Design Space app.

Click on the “Text” button and type in your text. For example, since I am working on my mom’s 60th birthday party, I will type in the text “Sixty Years Loved” in all caps.

I used the Muthiara font which is a font that I downloaded from www.dafont.com.  This was the same font used in my cake topper, tumbler cup, and face mask projects.

Because my sash is 3 1/2 inches wide, I will resize my words to about 2 3/4 inches tall.

Copy the text two more times so that the font size of each word is the same.

In the first row, delete everything except the word “Sixty.”  For the second row, delete everything except the words “Years.” In the third row, delete everything except the word “Loved.”

Right-click on each word and select the word “Weld” to make the touching letters connect in one continuous piece.

Cutting Out the Text With the Cricut Machine

Click on the “Make It” button.

Click on the “Mirror” button on the left side of the screen to reverse all of the letters.

For this project, I used Glitter Iron-On Transfer to add a little sparkle to my sash.

Tip: After removing the label, roll it up and place it inside the cardboard tube so that you can tell what kind of vinyl it is for your next project.

Spread the vinyl on your Cricut mat shiny side down.

Place the mat inside your Cricut Machine.

Cut out each word. Use your weeding tool to weed away the unnecessary parts of each word.

Go to google and search for “Cricut Heat Guide.”

When the page opens, change the Heat Transfer Material to Glitter Iron-On.

Click on “Base Material.” Because “Satin” is not an option, I just selected “Cotton.”  If it makes you feel more comfortable, you can choose a material with a lower heat setting.
