Valentine’s Day is quickly approaching, and I know your child may need a Valentine’s Card box to take to their class party. If you’re anything like me, you realize that homemade boxes are the cutest. So today, I want to share my most recent craft project: A Nintendo Switch DIY Valentine Card box.
Anyone child who enjoys playing the Nintendo Switch will love this Valentine card box. It’s not only functional, but it is also super cool. The best part is that it’s so simple to make! To create this, you don’t need to be an expert crafter. You only need some simple materials and imagination.
So if you are looking for a unique and cool craft for your child who loves playing with their Nintendo Switch, this DIY Valentine Card box is perfect. It’s a great way to express your creativity and show your child how much you care. So gather your materials, and let’s get started!
Materials
For this project, you will need the following:
- Large white Valentine’s Day Mailbox by Creatology
- Roll of painter’s tape
- Red, black, and blue acrylic craft paint
- Colorful pop-up stickers from Crafter’s Square
- styrofoam dowel
- hot glue gun
- Crafter’s Square permanent vinyl
- Paintbrush
- Scissors
How To Make a DIY Valentine Box
First, you’ll take two long pieces of painter’s tape to mark off three sections of the box. Ensure that your painter’s tape is straight and even with the opening in the center of the top.
Go all the way down the sides of the box as well. Make sure your tape is straight because when you’re painting, you want your lines to be crisp, sharp, and without jagged edges.
Ensure that your painter’s tape is even with the opening in the center of the top.
Painting the Nintendo Switch DIY Valentine Box
Grab your red paint and your paintbrush, and paint smooth, beautiful strokes all over the first section of the lid of the box. Be sure to paint the sides of the box as well. Now you don’t have to paint the part of the box underneath the lid because nobody’s going to see that part anyway. Also, the paint will probably stick to the top of the box and get messed up, so don’t worry about that part.
Paint the third section with blue acrylic craft paint. This color is called island blue by Anita’s acrylic craft paint. Cover the entire area just like we did with the red paint, and make sure to make your strokes smooth and even the same as before.
Use as many coats of paint as you need. For example, I did two coats of paint for my box but do however many are necessary for your color not to be transparent or have any streaks showing.
Adding the Buttons and Controllers
Get your colorful pop-up stickers, and you’ll paint nine of them with black acrylic craft paint. I used my hand dryer to help the stickers dry a little faster, but that’s optional.
Remove your painter’s tape. Grab your black acrylic craft paint and paintbrush, and carefully outline the edge of the blue and red sections with black paint. Then, you’re going to fill the entire thing in.
Tip: You shouldn’t put the painter’s tape on top of the blue or red paint because it will remove some paint color. I decided to use a post-it to help me make a straighter line.
Cut two slices off your Styrofoam roll, probably about 1/2 an inch thick. You’re going to paint them black.
In the red section, you’re going to hot glue one of your Styrofoam slices at the top. Then, right underneath it, you’re going to glue those four Dollar Tree stickers that you painted black in the diamond shape.
Do the same thing in your blue section, but in reverse. The Styrofoam slice will be at the bottom, and the four stickers in the diamond shape will be right above it.
Go around your box and touch up any spots that need another coat.
Making the Faux Display Screen for Your Box
Grab your black Dollar Tree vinyl and measure a piece of 6 inches on one side and four inches on the other. Next, you can use a paper trimmer or scissors to cut the vinyl. I cut the piece too wide, so I returned to the paper cutter and cut off an inch more of the width. Repeat all of those steps to make a second piece of vinyl.

Now we’re going to make the Nintendo Switch screen. Peel off the backing of the vinyl and place it in the center of one of the black sides of the box. Then, put it on the lid about 1/2 inch from the top.
It’s essential to make sure it’s straight when placing it down. Then, smooth it out and fold the excess inside the box’s opening.
Repeat the last few steps to create the bottom half of the screen.
Adding the Finishing Touches
It’s looking cute so far, but I want to add just a few more details to make it pop.
With the scraps of vinyl, cut out a small square to make the “Capture Button.” Place it below the “Directional Buttons” on the red side of the box.
Then, cut out a tiny little rectangle and place it in the top right corner of the red section.
Cut out a small circle and put it below the right stick to the left side to create the home button. Next, cut out a tiny little circle and put it in the top left corner of the blue section. You can also use the 9th colorful popup sticker that you painted black earlier.
Cut out a tiny plus sign and put it in the top left corner of the blue section.
Voila! We made a cool Nintendo Switch DIY Valentine box to put your kids Valentine’s Day cards in. Isn’t it cute?
