I’m preparing for a 60th birthday party, so I thought it would be helpful to show you guys how to make a cake topper with Cricut.
The theme of this party is “60 Years Loved,” but you can use this technique for a birthday party for any age. You can also make this DIY layered cake topper for an anniversary, retirement, or holiday party.
You can make it more custom by switching out the words and putting their name or a different theme. Also, you can use whatever number you need to represent the person’s age. You can take the same concept and twist it to make the topper however you would like.
This cake topper is so simple to make, and it will definitely “Jazz Up” any birthday cake and take it to a whole new level.
Materials Needed
- Pink and Gold 12 X 12″ glitter cardstock (1 of each)
- 1- 8.5 X 11″ cardstock
- 1- 12 X 12″ cardstock
- Cookie Sticks
- Cricut Machine (I have the Cricut Explore Air 2)
- Hot Glue gun
How To Make a Cake Topper with Cricut
Open your Cricut Design Space App.
Designing your Cake Topper
Click on the text box and type in the number “60”. The font that I used for the number was Cricut Sans. Drag the number until it’s about 2.7 inches tall.
Right-click the number and click “Ungroup” so that you can slide the numbers close together.
Select both the “six” and the “zero,” right-click and select the word “Group” to sync them back together again.
Change the color of the number to pink.
Now, type in the word “Years.” The font that I used was Muthiara which I downloaded on dafont.com. It’s the same font that I used for the Tumbler Cup project and some of the masks in the Face Masks project. This font is free to use for personal use, but if you are selling something, you have to get the author’s permission first.
Click and drag to make the word smaller.
Change the color of the word “Years” to the same pink as the number “60.”
Move “Years” and “60” closer together and line up the top of the “60” with the top of “Years. Play with the spacing until it looks the way that you want.
Right-click the word and select “Weld.”
Click on “text” and type “Loved.” Position the words close together however you would like. Change the color of the word “Loved” to the same pink as the word and number. Line the bottom of the word “Loved” with the bottom of the “60.” Play with the spacing and sizing until it looks the way that you prefer.
Right-click the word “Weld.”
Now that the words are positioned the way you want them select all three and click “offset.” I like my offset to be about 0.12″ in thickness. Click “apply.” Change the offset color to “white.”
Next, move all the pink words to the side and click on the white layer. Click on the “offset” again to make the third layer and hit “apply.” Change the color of the third layer to “blue.”
I don’t want the holes in the blue layer between the words “years” and “loved.” Select the blue layer and click on “contour” in the bottom right corner of the screen. Select the spaces you don’t want and close the box.
Put all of the pink words from the top layer back on top to see if you like how it looks.
I didn’t want the spaces in the blue layer between the word “Years” and “Loved, so I got rid of them by clicking on the “Contour” button in the bottom right corner of the screen. Select the spaces that you want to fill and close the box.
I wanted to make two cake toppers, so I copied everything and changed the font color to gold (or yellow).
Cutting the Cake Topper Layers
Click on the “Make It” button.
My white cardstock is 8.5 X 11″, so I clicked on “Material Size” to change it.
Put the white cardstock on the Cricut mat and feed it into the machine. Change the dial to “cardstock.” Press the “Load/Unload” and the “Go” buttons and let the Cricut Machine do its thing!
Weed the paper off the mat and throw away the unnecessary scraps.
The next two papers that I will use is 12 X 12″ glitter cardstock paper. On the Cricut Design Space app, make sure the Material Size is correct.
Go over to your computer and set the dial to “Custom.”
Then, go back to your computer. The Custom Window should pop up. Choose “Glitter Cardstock” under the Cardstock options. Then, select “Done.”
Put the pink glitter cardstock in the Cricut machine, press the Load/Unload button, and then the “Go” button.
The blue paper is 12 X 12″ regular cardstock paper, so go to the computer and change the Material Size. Then go back to your Cricut Machine and adjust the dial to “Cardstock.” Then, press “Go” again and weed the paper from the mat.
Now, let’s put these cake toppers together!
Use a hot glue gun to glue the white cardstock to the blue cardstock. Make sure that it is centered before you push it down.
Now, glue the glitter cardstock to the white cardstock.
Flip the topper over and put a dollop of hot glue in the center. Grab the Cookie Stick and place it in the center of the glue. Make sure the stick is straight before it dries. Put another blob of glue on top of the cookie stick and allow the glue to cool.
Tips for making a Cake Topper
If your cake topper is too heavy, you can glue two Cookie Sticks to the back of your cake topper to distribute the weight evenly.
Frequently Asked Questions
I can’t find Cookie Sticks. What else can I use as a replacement?
There are so many things that you can use as a substitute for the cookie sticks. For example, you can use wooden dowels, lollipop sticks, paper straws, or acrylic lollipop sticks, to name a few.
