How To Make an Elephant Cupcake Topper for a Baby Shower

One of the more popular baby shower themes is the elephant theme.  This theme is perfect because it is adorable, and it can be gender-neutral. Unfortunately, throwing a party can become quite pricey, so if you are on a budget, I will share how I made a super cute elephant cupcake topper for a baby shower or first birthday.

What You'll Need

Designing the Elephant Cupcake Toppers on Cricut Design Space

Open up your Cricut Design Space App.

Click on “Shapes” and then click on the circle.  Drag it to about two inches wide.

Go to “Images” and type in the word “Circle.” Scroll down until you see the flowery note card shape shown above.  Move the flowery shape behind the circle and resize until it’s slightly larger than the circle.  For example, my shape was about 2.7 inches in height.

Click on images again and type in the word elephant.   I chose the fee elephant, but (if you’re ballin’ like that) you can select whichever elephant you like.  Then, once again, click inset elephant to add the elephant into your Design Space.

The elephant needs to fit inside the circle, so change the size to about 1.2 inches tall.

Change the color of each layer to a different color so that Cricut knows to cut each layer on a separate piece of cardstock paper.

Make two more copies of each layer.

If the paper you are using for the bottom flower layer has color only on one side, you will need to make another copy to line up together on its back.

Change the colors of each layer to create a pattern with my cupcake toppers, but of course, this is optional for you.

Click on the “Make It” button.

Because my paper was 8.5 X 11 inches, I changed the material size of each paper to match that.

For the black layer, I used leftover black glitter cardstock that I had from another project.

Cutting the Elephant Cupcake Toppers With Your Cricut Machine

Make sure the dial on your Cricut Machine is set to cardstock, and then press the “Go” button.

Weed away the unnecessary parts.  Be careful pulling your elephant off of the mat so that you don’t rip off its tail.

Repeat the same process for the yellow cardstock and the blue glitter cardstock paper.  The blue glitter paper was also leftover scraps from another project.

Once all of your pieces are cut out, make sure to clean up any edges of the elephant and punch out holes that need to be weeded away.

Assembling the Elephant Cupcake Toppers

Now let’s start putting these bad boys together.

First, glue the elephants onto the circles with Elmer’s Glue.

Some of the heavier cardstock elephants might have to be reinforced with the hot glue gun, so plug in your glue gun.

Now grab the flowery note card and put a blob of hot glue in the center.  Next, place the lollipop stick in the center of the hot glue gun and hold it for a few seconds.

Put another blob of hot glue in the center and press your circle with the elephant in it in the center of the glue.  Make sure it is centered with the flowery note card.

Also, don’t forget to glue a flower notecard back to back with another if it only has color on one side.
