How To Create a Personalized Journal Cover

Designing Your Personalized Journal Cover in Cricut Design Space

Start by opening a new project in your Cricut Design Space app. Click on “Images” and type “natural hair” in the search box to find a design that suits your style. I chose a design by PK Oldham and added it to the canvas. While it was gorgeous, I tweaked it to fit my aesthetic.

This image shows options in Cricut Design Space after typing in "natural hair". The image selecting shows a black woman with hoop earrings and an afro.

To adjust, I selected the layer with the skin tone, deleted it (since I’m using the journal color as the skin tone), and combined the hair and earrings into one layer. Then, I clicked “Combine” and “Weld” to merge the layers.

Measure your journal to ensure the design fits—mine was 8.25 by 5.75 inches. Resize your design accordingly by dragging it to fit the measurements. Create a rectangle in Design Space with these dimensions to use as a template, then delete it later.

I thought it would be adorable to add some little heart cutouts in her hair, so I hit the heart shape on the left side of the screen and made it red to stand out. After resizing it to about 0.75 by 0.66 inches, I placed it where I wanted and used the Slice tool to cut it out. You can move the hearts around, resize them, and repeat the steps as many times as you want to get the perfect look. I also added some stars and starbursts, spreading them out across the journal cover to give it some extra sparkle.

Cutting Your Design with Cricut

Once your design is set, click “Make It” and choose “On Mat” for cutting. If you don’t have a Cricut membership, note that some designs might require a purchase. Select your base material as Holographic Sparkle Vinyl.

Cut a piece of vinyl to 12 inches, place it on your mat, and use your brayer tool to smooth it out. Load the mat into your Cricut machine, hit “Go,” and let it do its magic. For those intricate designs, ensure the vinyl is securely in place before cutting to avoid mishaps.

Weeding the Vinyl

After cutting, it’s time to weed your design. Carefully remove any excess vinyl using a weeding tool, being incredibly gentle with intricate details. For small and delicate parts, take your time to avoid tearing.

I recycled the little heart cutouts as stickers for my journal, so don’t throw away the scraps—you might find creative use for them!

Applying the Vinyl to Your Personalized Journal Cover

Cut a piece of transfer tape large enough to cover your entire design. Lay the transfer tape over your vinyl, and use your Cricut scraper tool to smooth it out. Position the design on your journal cover, ensuring it’s exactly where you want it before sticking it down—this vinyl is super sticky! Use your scraper tool or brayer to press the design down smoothly and avoid bubbles.

If needed, apply a clear sealant to protect the design. If you run into issues with the transfer tape, manually placing the vinyl on the spine can work, though it might be tricky. Take your time to ensure everything is centered and smooth for a polished look.

So, let’s get your name on the journal’s spine! I initially tried using Cricut Transfer Tape to stick the name on, but it just wasn’t happening. Maybe it was because the vinyl wasn’t official Cricut material—I’m not sure. It was a whole mess, so I decided to peel off the letters and place them by hand. It was tricky, especially trying to keep everything straight and centered, and it ended up a little crooked. But hey, I was cool with it—you have to do what works for you. Once you’ve got your name on there, make sure it’s smooth by gently going over it with a scraper or a brayer to avoid peeling off the letters.

Frequently Asked Questions

Got questions about making a personalized journal cover with Cricut? I’ve got you covered with these common queries.

  • Can I use any type of journal for this project, or do I need a specific kind?
You can use almost any type of journal, but make sure it has a smooth, flat surface for the best application of vinyl. Hardcover journals work particularly well, but you can also personalize softcovers with extra care.

  • How do I ensure my Cricut vinyl design adheres well to a textured journal cover?
Use a strong adhesive vinyl for textured covers and apply extra pressure with a brayer or scraper tool to ensure it sticks well. You might also need to carefully press down on the design for a few extra minutes.

  • What should I do if my vinyl design doesn’t cut properly?
Check your Cricut settings and make sure you’re using the right type of vinyl setting. If the problem persists, ensure your blade is sharp, and the vinyl is correctly aligned on the cutting mat.

  • Can I use Cricut Smart Vinyl for this project?
Yes, Cricut Smart Vinyl can be used for a personalized journal cover, especially if you’re using a Cricut machine that supports Smart Vinyl. It’s convenient for larger designs as it doesn’t require a cutting mat.

  • How can I fix mistakes if I place the vinyl design incorrectly on the journal?
Carefully peel off the vinyl and reapply it. If the adhesive is strong, use a heat source like a hairdryer to loosen it up before repositioning. Be gentle to avoid damaging the journal or the vinyl.
