  • 1 Skewer
  • 1 Small Book

How To Make a Tassel Garland

Before you start making the tassels, cut a long piece of yarn.  This piece of yarn should be as long as you would like your garland because it is your garland base.

Grab your small book and one bundle of yarn.  You are going to take your yarn and wrap it around the book horizontally.  I counted how many times I went around the book to make each tassel the same thickness.  I wrapped the yarn around my book twenty times, but you can do more or less depending on the look you are trying to achieve.

On the side of the book where the pages would normally open, squeeze the yarn so that it is bunched together.

Use a skewer to push the new string under the yarn loops | Make Your Own Tassel Garland in No Time

Cut a new piece of yarn about 12 inches long.  Using the skewer, push the new string underneath the “bridge” created by the gathered yarn, going over the closed pages of the book.  Once that 12-inch piece of yarn has gone underneath the “bridge” and is sticking out on both sides, tie the yarn string in a double knot around the gathered yarn.

Carefully slide all of the yarn off of the book.

Cut through the bottom of the loops of yarn | Make Your Own Tassel Garland in No Time

With your scissors, cut through the bottom of the loops of yarn.  Pull down on the yarn before you cut to make sure that you are cutting evenly through all of the strings at the same time.

Attach the tassel to a small piece of string and tie a knot | Make Your Own Tassel Garland in No Time

Take the two strings from the double knot at the top of the tassel and use those to attach the tassel to the garland’s base string by tying a double knot.   If you want to make a single tassel and not a garland, then skip this step.  If you are using a rope or a thicker sting as your garland base, you may have to glue your garland with the hot glue gun to secure it onto the string instead of tying a knot.

Attach the tassel to a longer string | Make Your Own Tassel Garland

Cut a new piece of yarn about 12 inches long and lay it horizontally on your table.  Grab your tassel and come through all the strings with your fingers to ensure that they are neat and orderly. Lay the tassel on top of the yarn.  The string should be about an inch from the top of the tassel and crossing the tassel horizontally.  Tie the string around the tassel in a double knot.

Comb through the strings of the tassel again with your fingers.  Take your scissors and cut across the bottom of the tassel, making all of the strings even at the bottom.

If you don’t want your tassel to move, take your base string and tie a knot around the knotted string that is attached to the garland.

Make sure that the tassels are evenly spaced | Make Your Own Tassel Garland in No Time

If you are making a garland, repeat all the steps with the same color yarn or a different one if you are making a pattern.  Before you tie the base string around the tassel to secure it in place, use your ruler to measure the distance between the knots and then secure it.  Ensure that all of the knots are the same distance apart with each tassel before you secure it to the base string.   All of my tassels were two inches apart, but you can do more or less depending on the look you are going for.    Add as many tassels as you would like.
