How to Make a Pom Pom Wall Hanging

Pom Pom Wall Hangings are super cute, and they can make such a significant impact on your room style.  This style can add such a modern-bohemian flare to your bedroom or living room. If you use the same colors that I used to make the wall hanging, it will look perfect in a tween or teenage girl’s room.  You can use more muted tones to create a more adult vibe.   I’m going to show you how to make this gorgeous pom pom wall hanging.

Materials

How To Make It

Decorating the Dowel

Begin by wrapping the 24″ in twine.  Put a dab of hot glue on the end of the dowel.  Place the twine in the hot glue and wrap it around the dowel tightly.  Use the hot glue to secure it after every few times around the dowel.

If you cannot locate a 24″ dowel, you can use two 12″ inch dowels instead.  If you use the two dowels, you will need to glue the two dowels together with a hot glue gun and wrap packing tape around where the two dowels meet.

Cut seven pieces of string; each piece should be at least 4 feet long.  Tie the end of each string to the dowel using a double knot.  Space the strings out evenly.

How To Make a Pom Pom

Before making the wall hanging, we first have to learn how to make a pom pom.

Wrap yarn around the palm of your hand twenty times for thinner pom poms(and forty times for fuller pom poms).  You can wrap the yarn a lot more times than that if you would like.  The more times you wrap it, the fuller your pom pom will look.  I wrapped the yarn twenty times because I was making a large number of pom poms, and I wanted to make sure I had enough yarn, but it’s totally up to you.

Carefully slide the yarn off of your hand while keeping it in the same shape.

Cut another piece of yarn of the same color about 12 inches long.  Use the 12″ inch piece to tie a tight double knot around the yarn that came off your hand.

Use your scissors to cut through every single loop of yarn on both sides.

Fan out all of the pom pom strings and use the scissors to cut in a perfect circle.  Keep cutting pieces until the circle is perfectly even.

Do not cut the 12″ piece that’s holding everything together (unless you are making a single pom pom).

Fluff the pom pom out.

Attaching the Pom Poms to the Thread

Use the 12″ yarn to tie the pom pom to the string with a double knot.

To prevent the pom poms from sliding, place a dab of hot glue on top of the knot that’s wrapped around the thread.  Push the pom pom closed to cover up the glue.  Be careful not to burn your fingers.

Cut the 12″ pieces down to the same size as the rest of the pom pom.  Be careful not to cut the thread accidentally.

If you do happen to cut the thread, take another piece of thread and tie it above the last pom pom and continue.

I wanted my wall hanging to have a pointed shape at the bottom.  To achieve this, the first and seventh threads hold ten pom poms, the second and sixth threads hold 11, the third and fifth threads hold 12 pom poms, and the 4th or middle string has 13 pom poms.

Also, I arranged the pom pom colors in a pattern to create the same pointed shape.

Finishing Touches

When you get to the end of each string of pom poms, take the string’s end and tie it around the part of the string right above the bottom pom pom using a double knot.

Take a twine piece about 2 feet long, and tie it to the dowel using a double knot between the first and second strings and the other end between the sixth and seventh strings.

Cut off any excess pieces of strings.
