I’m so excited to share a DIY wall decor project I recently made for my little girl’s room. Do you know how Pottery Barn Kids always has the cutest stuff, but it can be pretty expensive? Well, I saw this adorable wall decor piece in their catalog, and I just had to have it for my girl’s room, but the price tag was a little too high for my budget. So, I decided to make my version! And, I have to say, I’m pretty proud of the result.
I think the DIY wall decor turned out just as cute as the Pottery Barn Kids piece and was much more budget-friendly. Any little girl would be thrilled with it, and it would touch of charm and character to their room. So if you’re looking for a fun and easy DIY project to do with your little girl or for her room, I think you’ll love this one!
In this post, I’ll walk you through the steps to making your DIY wall decor inspired by Pottery Barn Kids. We’ll go over all the supplies you need, and I’ll show you how to put it together. Whether you’re a seasoned DIY-er or just starting, this project is excellent for all skill levels. So, grab your supplies, and let’s get started!

How To Make DIY Wall Decor for Your Little Girl's Room
First, I took apart the picture frame and measured the paper that came inside. It turned out to be 9 3/8″ x 11 3/8″, so I cut two white 12″ x 12″ cardstock papers down to that size. You can use your Cricut Machine or a paper trimmer to do this. It was pretty easy, and now I have the perfect size of paper to use for my craft project!
I used my Cricut Machine to cut a heart in the center of a white cardstock paper. I made the seat big enough to fill up the width of the paper but left about 3/4″ of an inch of space on each side of the heart. This way, I have plenty of room to add decorative touches around the heart. It was enjoyable, and I can’t wait to see how it turns out!
*Tip: Suppose you don’t have a Cricut Machine. No worries! You can still make a heart shape by using a heart stencil. It’s a simple and easy way to get the shape you want. Trace the stencil onto your paper, then cut out the shape with scissors. It may take a little bit more time, but the result will be just as lovely!
I took the cardstock paper with the heart cut out and placed it on the other sheet of paper. Then, I traced the heart shape onto the second sheet of paper using the cutout as a guide. It was straightforward, and now I have two perfectly aligned heart shapes that I can use for my craft project!
I had seven sheets of paper that I wanted to use for my craft project. First, I put them in the color order I wanted, careful not to put similar colors next to each other. Then, I cut a strip off each piece of paper, one by one, with the paper, turned horizontally. Each strip was about 1/2″ wide, and I glued them vertically onto the pencil-drawn heart. I made sure to start each strip above where the heart began and go past the heart’s length, and I made sure that each strip slightly overlapped. The goal was to cover the entire heart shape without any gaps. It doesn’t have to be perfectly straight, though, because the inspiration piece I was following wasn’t either. So, I repeated this pattern until I covered the entire heart’s width. It was a bit time-consuming, but it was worth it!
* Tip: No worries if you don’t have any construction paper on hand to cut into strips! You can still create a similar look by using Washi Tape instead. It’s a versatile material that comes in many different colors and patterns, so you can choose one that matches your craft project perfectly. Plus, it’s simple to use and won’t require any cutting. Just stick the Washi Tape onto your paper in a vertical pattern to create the effect you’re looking for.
So, to finish my craft project, I took the white cardstock paper with the heart cutout and placed it on top of the paper with the colorful stripes. Then, I put the striped heart and the mat inside the frame and put the frame back together. I didn’t use the pre-cut mat that came with the frame, though. This way, the colorful stripes were the project’s main focus, and the white heart cutout created a nice contrast. The simple finishing touch made the whole thing look really polished.
