Materials

How to Make a Hot Air Balloon Centerpiece

Preparing the Basket

First, grab a cylinder gift box from Dollar Tree and scissors. We’re going to cut a slit in the box that goes from the top down about an inch and a half. Do the same thing on the opposite side of the box. Now, use your scissors to cut from the end of the first slit to the other, so you’re essentially cutting off the top inch and a half of the box. Trim off any jagged edges until you’re happy with how it looks.

Next, turn your gift box upside down and place it on foam. Use a light marker to trace around the gift box to get an idea of the size you need to cut the foam. Use a knife or, even better, a foam cutter if you have one. Cut the foam to fit inside the gift box, then place it inside it.

Decorating the Basket of the Hot Air Balloon Centerpiece

We’ll wrap the rope around the gift box from the bottom to the top, using hot glue to hold it in place. Hold the rope in the glue for about 30 seconds to ensure it’s secure before moving on. Be careful not to burn your fingers with the hot glue while making the basket.

Next, assemble the lantern by placing the metal expander inside it. Be gentle so you don’t tear the paper. We’ll stick some flowers in the foam to cover it up. I found some cute but inexpensive Dollar Tree flowers, but you can use better quality ones from Hobby Lobby, Michaels, or Amazon. Cut some flowers and stick them into the foam. Start with the white flowers, leaving about an inch of stem to push through the foam. Then, do the same with the pink and purple flowers.

Side note: If you have trouble getting the flower stems into the foam, use the end of your scissors to punch a small hole and secure the flowers with hot glue.

Assembling the Hot Air Balloon

Grab a pack of cake topper treat sticks. Push four sticks into the foam at a slight angle on opposite ends of the basket, like North, East, South, and West. Use scissors to carve out small holes if you can’t get the sticks into the foam. Secure the lantern to each treat stick using a hot glue gun, but be careful where you place the glue to avoid tearing the lantern. Hold them together for at least 30 seconds to ensure they’re secure.

Adding Finishing Touches to the Hot Air Balloon Centerpiece

Now, we must hide the ugly hot glue where the cake topper meets the paper lantern so that we can make some bows. Wired ribbon is better for this project because it keeps its shape better. Using your hot glue gun, glue each bow to the top of each cake topper stick. Hold them in place again to make sure they’re secure.

To finish off your ribbon, cut the bottom going across to make them even. Create an inverted V shape by folding the ends in half and cutting at an angle upwards towards the folded part. To curl the ends of your ribbon, use a cake topper stick or pencil and roll your ribbon up. Again, a wired ribbon works best for this, so pick some up if you want curly ribbons.
