Materials

  • Ashland Craft Pumpkins in 3 different sizes (small, medium, and large)
  • Small Carving Knife
  • Acrylic Craft Paint
  • Planter, Pot, or Stand
  • Wire Edge Ribbon
  • Hot Glue Gun
  • Glue Stick for Glue Gun
  •  Leaf Garland
  • Pack of Individual Fall Leaves
  • Bag of Small Rocks (Optional)

How Do I Make a Pumpkin Topiary?

Use a carving knife to make a hole in the bottom of the small and medium pumpkins. The hole in the small pumpkin needs to be big enough for its stem to fit inside the medium pumpkin. And the hole in the medium pumpkin should be big enough for its stem to fit inside the stem of the largest pumpkin.

Grab your acrylic craft paint and get creative! Paint each pumpkin any color you like. Make sure to give each coat of paint enough time to dry before adding another. Have fun, and let your imagination run wild!

While you’re waiting for the pumpkins to dry, you can decorate your planter, pot, or stand with some wired ribbon. I wrapped a fall-themed ribbon around mine and used a hot glue gun to secure it. I even made a cute bow and glued it to the front of the pot!

If the wind is a problem where you live, you might want to put some small rocks in your pot to keep it from blowing away. But for me, it’s always hot here, so I didn’t have to worry about that and skipped that step.

Once your pumpkins are all dry, grab your hot glue gun and put a bunch of glue around the edge of the pot. Then, take the biggest pumpkin, put it on top of the glue, and try to center it as best as possible. Finally, give it a little push for about 20 seconds so it sticks to the glue well.

Grab your medium-sized pumpkin, flip it over, and put a generous amount of hot glue around the hole you cut earlier. Then, put it on top of the big pumpkin, so the stem fits inside the hole. Give it a little push for 20 seconds, so it sticks to the hot glue and holds tight.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will hot glue hold pumpkins together?

Hot glue can be a good option for holding craft pumpkins together. Craft pumpkins are often made of foam or other lightweight materials, which hot glue can bond effectively. The hot glue will harden quickly, allowing you to move on to the next step of your project right away. Remember that hot glue may not be as strong as other adhesives, so it’s best used for lighter-duty projects. And as always, be careful with the hot glue gun and keep it away from your skin and clothes to avoid getting burned.

Can you superglue a craft pumpkin?

Yes, you can superglue a craft pumpkin. Since fake pumpkins are typically made of smoother, less porous materials like foam or plastic than actual pumpkins, the glue will probably adhere better to them. Keep the glue away from your skin and eyes, and use it in a well-ventilated location.
